16 Foods You Can Regrow From Scraps
If you’re interested in living a greener life or simply looking to save some money, here are 16 foods that can be regrown in your kitchen or outdoor garden. Growing up, my Caribbean parents grew quite a few plants in their garden. There’s nothing like the convenience of walking outside and picking a fresh apple, orange, or pepper. From watching my mom, I know that regrowing a plant is a lot of trial and error. Here are some tips for getting started with common kitchen scraps.
- Bok Choi: regrows from white end, place in shallow bowl of water in sunny place, transfer to soil after a week.

- Garlic: plant single clove root end down, needs plenty of sunlight.
- Ginger: plant a spare piece of ginger in potting soil with the newest buds facing upward, need indirect sunlight.
- Leeks: place the white root end in a glass jar with a little water, and leave it in a sunny position.
- Lemongrass: place root-end in a glass jar with a little water, leave in sunny area.
- Mushrooms: remove the head of the mushroom and plant the stalk in a pot with a mixture of soil and composed. Needs alternating warm and cool environment.
- Onions: cut off root end of onion, place in sunny area of garden and cover with soil.
- Pineapple: cut the green top off so no fruit remains, plant crown in a warm environment, water regularly. Takes 2-3 years for a viable plant.
- Potatoes: cut 2″ square piece with at least 2 eyes, allow to dry for a few days, plant potato piece 8″ deep with the eye facing upward, cover it with around 4″ of soil. Use nutrient rich soil.
- Romaine Lettuce: regrows from white end, place in shallow bowl of water in sunny place, transfer to soil after a week.
- Scallions: place the white root end in a glass jar with a little water, and leave it in a sunny position.
- Spring Onion: place the white root end in a glass jar with a little water, and leave it in a sunny position.
- Sweet Potatoes: bury all of part of the sweet potato in moist soil in a garden. Use organic sweet potatoes and transfer after shoot reaches 4″.
